Notes for John Henry McGUIRE
Paraphrased from Anise McGuire, John Henry's daughter-in-law:
Mr. McGuire died when our Stella was 15 months old. He was a little man, snow white hair, very intelligent. He liked crossword puzzles and liked for me to sit behind him and help. After his wife died, we stayed at the house and I spent a lot of time with him. He had a severe heart condition, and, at the end, he was bedridden, and I would sit with him.

His niece, Mary Louise Dacovich Crowley (DOB 1915) and his nephew, George (DOB 1921) recalled that their uncle had not been in good health for years. He was a thin man with blue eyes and light complexion. Mary Louise, George and brother Joe (DOB 1925) mentioned that he smoked cigars and that he owned a cigar store named Lagman and McGuire, 102 Royal Street. This was sometime in the 1890's.

Business stationery in the early 1900's reads "Office of J. H. McGuire, Successor to Lagman and McGuire, Manufactures of Fine Havana and Domestic Cigars, Strictly Handmade, 57 S. Joachim Street." In 1895 through at least 1898 John and family resided at 161 St. Joseph Street. The 1915 Mobile City Directory lists John H. McGuire as Auditor, St. Andrew Hotel. Records show the family living at 925 Church Street in 1915. They were living at 905 Dauphin Street at the time of his death in 1933, and must have been for some time since his and Stella's children were raised there.

John and Edward Bly Davis were good friends. (Edward married Katie Dacovich.)

John and Stella married about 1890, when he was 20. The first of 8 children, Louise, was born 1893. They joined the rest of the family at the St. Andrew's every Mardi Gras to watch the parades. It was a family tradition.

All of their children were born in the summer months!
