Notes for Angeline “Leila” DACOVICH
Angelina, who was called both Lena and Leila, was named after a New Orleans friend, Angelina
Basich. Her father always said, "Lena will live old because she reminds me of my aunt in the old
country who lived to 102." Surely enough, she lived until she was 94!
According to Joseph Dacovich (DOB 1925), Aunt Lena could never cook but she always bragged that
her father said that she made the best cup of coffee he ever tasted.
Angelina and her sister Agatha were left the old Dacovich residence on St. Joseph Street (in Mobile,
AL) but they lost it in a mortgage foreclosure in the early 1930s. It seems tey took out a second
mortgage and couldn't make the payments in hard times.
After they lost their house, the sisters lived for many years at the St. Andrew Hotel, which closed
sometime in the mod-1940s. They then went to live with their cousin Matthew Andrew McGuire and
his wife Sally.
